A New OS for a New Era

A new OS for a new era

Imagine a world with a global Operating System designed to benefit humanity, not exploit it. We have the resources needed to meet everyone’s needs, but our systems are deeply flawed and failing. Badly. We are long overdue for an upgrade. Social Systems Lab was concieved out of a practical desire to build that upgrade—to design and prototype tools that allow individuals and communities to communicate and share resources. Tools that could be used to build a new, more humane, efficient, and collaborative system. This is our purpose, to build these tools and to support those who which to use them

Making Circles

At the core of our work is a simple idea: humans and the comunities we form should control our shared resources. Instead of relying on the traditional centralized systems that invariably lead to hoarding of wealth and power, we work with an open-source ecosystem that allows individuals to share, allocate and man age resources directly. Our vision is a shared digital space, supported by its members, where your profile reflects your contributions to the world. An identity that says something about who we actually are, what we mean to our communities. Our flagship project Circles is dedicated to making this possible, providing a platform where changemakers find each other, collaborate, and solve real-world problems

Paying It Forward

Good software and goodwill are a great start, but real-world change requires more than this to have a meaningful impact. It needs a viable dynamic that ensures that resources flow naturally to where they’re needed most, something a purely profit-oriented paradigm cannot achieve.

Enter the Altruistic Wallet, the beating heart at the core of our proposed new Operation System. A wallet whose contents can only be spent on someone else, on projects and people making a difference. It’s decentralized, democratic, and transparent, and puts decision-making in the hands of the community, not faceless institutions far removed from the lives they are supposed to improve. Also, it is designed to be a positive attractor, to grow over time, as will it’s share in and control over our commons.

Tools for Transformation

We build tools to allow changemakers around the world to connect, collaborate, and create solutions for the challenges we all face—from environmental crises to inequality. To salvage from the old but not stifle that which seeks to emerge.

What do we want to help emerge? Empowered individuals living in thriving local communities, supported by global networks. Circles and the Altruistic Wallet are designed to provide the digital infrastructure for this transformation, providing both a steadily increasing flow of resources and a voice to every individual in how resources are to be used. Through this, local communities can become a global village, capable of dealing with global challenges far more effectively than the old systems ever could. An ecosystem where trust, cooperation, and contribution are the real currencies, and where anyone, anywhere, can make a difference.

The Human Algorithm

Wildly ambitious? Absolutely, but we are a wildly ambitious species. We’ve taken on greater technical challenges than designing a simple system that works for the broader benefit of everyone, not just the few at the top. It is what most of us want after all.

What might we accomplish as a species if we are given to freedom to truly explore our potential without the imperatives and constraints of the current system? Who might we discover that we are, if we were allowed to simply be? Might we turn out to be gracious and generous, a species of apex custodians, not merely self-serving predators storming towards a cliff of extinction as our reach outpaces our grasp?

We prefer the former story here at the lab and we believe that open-source technology and human-centred design is the best way to plot the course to that better world over the horizon. We have a few promising tools in the making and a beautiful crew of purpose-driven individuals and communities eager to experiment and explore. We’d love for you to join us.
